[News Release] Kyoto University Startup OOYOO, Developer of Innovative Gas Separation Membranes, Selected for NEDO’s “Support Program for Practical R&D and Mass Production Demonstration of Deep Tech Startups in the GX Field (GX)”

~ Accelerating the Development of Revolutionary CO2 Separation Technology Toward a Carbon-Neutral Society with Approximately JPY900 Million(≒USD6 Million) in Subsidies ~

OOYOO Ltd. (Headquarters: Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture; Representative director: Shogo Otani), a deep tech startup originating from Kyoto University, aims to realize a carbon-neutral society through innovative gas separation membrane technology. The company is pleased to announce that it has been selected for the PCA phase of the “Support Program for Practical R&D and Mass Production Demonstration of Deep Tech Startups in the GX Field (GX),” hosted by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). This selection will provide approximately JPY=900 million in subsidies over two years.

Through the GX program, OOYOO will develop a prototype and conduct demonstration experiments for a container-sized CO2 separation and recovery unit capable of recovering approximately 10 tons of CO2 per day using highly efficient and cost-effective separation membranes. This initiative aims to pave the way for market introduction.

The program provides support to ‘deep tech startups’ that undertake research and development of innovative technologies aimed at solving economic and social challenges that require national and global action—such as carbon neutrality, resource circulation, and economic security. These technologies typically demand long-term R&D efforts and large-scale funding, with inherently high risks.
The program consists of three phases:

    1. STS Phase (Early-stage Practical R&D),
    2. PCA Phase (Late-stage Practical R&D), and
    3. DMP Phase (Mass Production Demonstration).

Support is provided for R&D and commercialization efforts across these phases. Following the completion of each phase, startups that pass a stage-gate review may advance to the next phase, enabling continuous progress of their projects.

■ About OOYOO

Founded in 2020, OOYOO is a deep tech startup originating from Kyoto University. Based on the pioneering technology developed by its founder, Professor Easan Sivaniah, OOYOO has been advancing research and development of gas separation membranes, focusing on achieving both high performance and cost efficiency in CO2 separation. The company’s membrane technology significantly reduces CO2 recovery costs to less than one-third compared to conventional methods while enabling compact installation. This next-generation environmental technology has garnered considerable attention as a key innovation for realizing a decarbonized society.

In October 2024, OOYOO successfully raised JPY430 million (≒USD 2.9million) in seed funding from multiple venture capital firms. Including the Green Innovation Fund project by NEDO, for which OOYOO was selected in 2022, and the latest subsidy, the company’s total funding to date amounts to approximately JPY2.35 billion (≒USD 16 million).

OOYOO has collaborated with numerous industrial partners to advance the implementation and social adoption of its technology. The success of this subsidy project will accelerate the scale-up of OOYOO’s technology and its application across various industries, contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
